In continuation of efforts at capacitating journalists to report from informed perspectives, on 22 March 2024, Renevlyn Development Initiative (RDI) organised a virtual journalism training on reporting gene drives.
The training had in attendance 20 media practitioners from across Nigeria’s national and private media organisations including the Guardian, Punch, Daily Sun, Premium Times, Vanguard, Nigerian Tribune, New Telegraph, Television Continental (TVC) and Africa Independent Television (AIT) among others.
The resource persons at the training included Michael Simire the MD/CEO of Environews, Barbara Pilz of Save Our Seeds, Diego Barcena, an ecological farmer and Barbara Ntambirweki of the ETC Group.
Topics addressed were Communicating the Jargons of Science, Gene Drives: What is it all about?, Behind the Scenes of Gene Drives, and Africa’s Concerns about Gene Drives
Earlier in his welcome address, Philip Jakpor, RDI Executive Director, said that in conceiving the training the organization realized that the media is key not only in keeping the public informed but also in exposing and interrogating initiatives and innovations that are extraneous to Africans and African culture as part of its watchdog role.
